Awards and scholarships are an important resource for any researcher – and well worth the effort and time it takes to apply. 

Graduate Student Awards

We strongly encourage our graduate students to apply for the awards listed below. Additionally, have a look at the School of Graduate Studies website to find more awards.

Value: $17,500 for 12 months, non-renewable
Funded by: government-funded (federal)
Application deadline: early December (check CGS M page for exact deadline)

Eligibility: Canadians & permanent residents of Canada only

The Canada Graduate Scholarships-Master's (CGS M) program supports students who demonstrate a high standard of achievement in undergraduate and early graduate studies and helps them develop their research skills.  

Current MSc students:

  • Currently registered MSc students are not eligible to apply for CGS M unless planning on applying to the PhD program for the 2020-21 session.
  • Those nominated by the graduate unit for the CGS M are not guaranteed admission into the PhD program.
  • Award results will be released early April.

Prospective MSc students:

  • Those applying to our MSc program are welcome to apply for CGS M.
  • Those nominated by the graduate unit for the CGS M are not guaranteed admission into the MSc program.
  • Award results will be released early April.

Awards should be applied for one year in advance (at the time of application to either the MSc or PhD program).

Application includes:

  • Proposed Research Outline and Bibliography (one page each)
  • Transcripts (up-to-date official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate studies)
  • Canadian Common Curriculum Vitae
  • Two References

The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) program recognizes academic excellence in graduate studies at the master's and doctoral levels in all disciplines of academic study.

The Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology (QEII‐GSST) program is designed to encourage excellence in graduate studies in science and technology. Please get in touch with our graduate administrator at grad.statistics@utoronto.ca for application procedure and deadlines.

Applicants must submit an OGS application to their proposed graduate unit and select “Yes” that they would like to be considered for other graduate award competitions in the “Governmental Award Applications in Progress” section of the Awards and Financial Aid step of the application.

Doctoral Awards

Value: $35,000 per year for 36 months

The Canada Graduate Scholarships-Doctoral (CGS D)  program is to promote continued excellence in Canadian research by rewarding and retaining high-calibre doctoral students at Canadian institutions. By providing support for a high-quality research training experience to awardees, the CGS D program strives to foster impacts within and beyond the research environment.

The aim of the Doctoral Completion Award (DCA) is to support full-time PhD and SJD students who are beyond the funded cohort but within the time limit for the degree. The DCA value is determined by the graduate unit, and it may not be the same for every award holder. Please contact our graduate administrator at grad.statistics@utoronto.ca for application procedure and details. 

Value: $3,000 per recipient

Awarding body: U of T Department of Statistical Sciences

Application deadline: TBD

 

The Donald S. Fraser Doctoral Award is awarded to one part-time or full-time PhD student in the U of T Department of Statistical Sciences in their graduating year on the basis of academic merit. The recipient's research must contain important contributions to theoretical statistics.

 

Students will apply through the department and need to submit an application to be considered.

Value: Up to $6,000 to fund 2 to 6 months of travel
Student submission deadline: September 23, 2024, 4:30 p.m.
 
The Canada Graduate Scholarships – Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements (CGS-MSFSS) Program supports high calibre Canadian graduate students in building global linkages and international networks through the pursuit of exceptional research experiences at research institutions abroad. By accessing international scientific research and training, CGS-MSFSS recipients will contribute to strengthening the potential for collaboration between Canadian universities and affiliated research institutions and universities, or other research institutions outside of Canada.
 
 

Value: $21,000 per year for three years

Funded by: government-funded (federal)

Student submission deadline: September 19, 2024

The NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships-Doctoral Program (PGS D) provide financial support to high-caliber scholars who are engaged in a doctoral program in the natural sciences or engineering.

The Vanier CGS program aims to attract and retain world-class doctoral students by supporting students who demonstrate both leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies in social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and engineering, and health. The Vanier CGS program strongly encourages candidates to pursue their studies beyond the university that granted their previous degree(s).

SGS financial assistance programs

The School of Graduate Studies (SGS) offers various financial assistance programs to support students throughout their academic journeys. These primarily include grants and bursaries to assist with non-tuition-related expenses such as research travel, conference participation, and financial support help offset costs associated with students’ health and well-being throughout their degree. SGS completion funds may also be available to students who encounter delays in their academic progress and require additional time in their program.
