Actuarial Professional Experience Program with Internship

We offer Actuarial Professional Experience (PE) program for our Specialist students. We have been successful in connecting students to the industry and assisting them in finding actuarial internships.

There are two components to the PE program: a PE course (ACT390) and a paid full-time internship (ACT391).

In the PE course (now open to both Specialist and Major students), we prepare students for internships and future careers by offering weekly industry panels, soft skill workshops such as resume/networking/workplace conflict and resolution, one-on-one mock interviews, industry networking events, and an embedded actuarial case competition.

The vast majority of our students in the Specialist program since 2020-21 academic year have secured their internships through the PE program, working with nearly 30 industry partners including Manulife, Sunlife, Canada Life, Intact, Zurich, SwissRe, PartnerRe, WTW, CAAT, RBC, BMO, Wawanesa, Cooperators, and many more.

Both domestic and international students in the ACT Specialist program (but not Major) will be able to secure one work permit to take an internship during any semester of a school year (Fall, Winter, Summer).

Student Caroline Wallace

Our department and student organizations do a fabulous job of providing industry exposure through career panels, information sessions, and networking events. U of T is in the heart of Toronto, and these connections are invaluable for emerging professionals. The student community is welcoming, intellectual, and one that I am excited to contribute to!

Student Harsh Rughani

My internships at Munich RE and Swiss RE were pivotal in shaping my understanding of the actuarial field. Working across different teams, I gained firsthand experience that not only enhanced my practical skills but also deepened my appreciation for the challenges and complexities of actuarial science.
